A woman in her 20s is recovering after being hospitalised when what's believed to be a bull mastiff type dog attacked her in Mitchelstown.

The incident happened  in her home at around 9.30 yesterday morning and she suffered serious injuries to both arms when the dog belonging to her partner, attacked her.

Neighbours heard her screaming for help in the back yard of their rented house at Upper Cork Street in the town and a woman living nearby raised the alarm.

Gardai from Mitchelstown Garda Station, which is just a few doors away, raced to the scene and had to draw their batons to to get the dog to release the woman.

She was rushed by ambulance to Cork University Hospital where she underwent emergency surgery to try and save her hands which were badly injured in the attack.

Gardai managed to get the dog to a secure area where he was last night being held until his owner returns home but it's expected that the animal will be put down after the savage attack.
