Women's Aid oppose plans to remove 640 of the remaining public payphones

The domestic violence group says many women rely on these phones to make calls tot he helpline. In some cases their mobile phones are monitored by their abusive partners

Women's Aid says over a quarter of pay phone calls were made to a helpline.

The figures comes as the domestic violence group appeals for the remaining 900 pay phones around the country to be maintained.

Plans are afoot to remove 640 of the remaining public payphones but the domestic violence group says many women who contact their helpline rely on these phones to make those calls as their mobiles are often monitored by abusive partners.

There are 112 public pay phones across Cork city and county and Margaret Martin of Women's Aid told RedFM News that for some women these pay phones may be the only access to their helpline.
