Diego Forlan calls it a day

Uruguay legend Diego Forlan has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 40.

Forlan was joint top scorer at the 2010 World Cup, and was named in the team of the tournament, as Uruguay finished fourth.

He played 63 times for Manchester United between 2002 and 2004 scoring ten goals, before moving to Spain where he had very prolific spells with Villareal and Atletico Madrid. 

Forlan announced his retirement on his social media channels earlier today.

 

Translated it reads :

"After 21 years I made the decision to end my career as a professional footballer.

A beautiful stage closes full of great memories and emotions but another of new challenges will begin.

Thanks to all who in one way or another accompanied me on this path!"
