Disappointment for Ireland as Switzerland win in Geneva

It was another disappointing night for the Republic of Ireland as they went down to Switzerland at the Stade de Genève.

The result means that the Boys in Green must now beat Denmark at home on November 18th to qualify for Euro 2020.

The hosts went ahead with this effort from Haris Seferovic from outside the box.

While Ireland's fate was sealed late on when Shane Duffy turned the ball into his own net.

Captain Seamus Coleman was sent off in the second half, ruling him out of next month's crunch game at the Aviva Stadium.

Mick McCarthy admitted that their performance wasn't

"First half was poor, second half I thought it was considerably better. Having been down to ten men for the last 15 minutes or so I think they (the Irish players) can be really proud of how they carried on from that.

"And where are we? We're one game from qualification. Which I would have taken before the tournament started.

"I'd like to have a few more (shots on target) but if we get one on target and it beats the keeper we might just win 1-0 (against Denmark), that'll do me.

"It's winner takes all in that game. I keep saying I would have settled for that. I would have liked more shots on target and I'd like to have scored more goals. We got ourselves into this position by not conceding and being pretty tough at that and then nicking a goal if we have to. We're still in a position where we can qualify, and I'm happy enough with that."

Two Cork players started last night, with Alan Browne making his first competitive start, and John Egan continuing at the heart of the defence.

And Egan says it just wasn't good enough from them last night.

"First half I don't think we were at the races at all. Second half we upped it, and really took the game to them. It's just disappointing we didn't do that from the first minute. When we did that we had some good spells, and it's just disappointing really.

"They're a good side. But if we could have just started a bit better we'd have given ourselves a better chance. We showed in the second half when we took the game to them that we can play good stuff, and it's just a pity we didn't do that from the first minute."

Ireland host New Zealand in a friendly on November 14th, before facing Denmark in their final Euro 2020 qualifier four days later on the 18th.
