The band are classified as a celtic punk band and originated in 1996 in Massachusetts. The band got their name from an alcohol-detoxification facility called Dr. John "Dropkick" Murphy's.
The current band consists of Ken Casey on bass and lead vocals, Al Barr, lead vocals, Jeff DeRosa on banjo, guitar, tinwhistle & harmonica, James Lynch on guitar and backing vocals, Matt Kelly on drums, bodhran and backing vocals and Tim Brennan on accordian, mandolin & keyboard.
The band are influenced by other punk bands such as The Clash, Sex Pistols, The Ramones as well as Irish bands The Pogues and The Dubliners.
The band have recorded and released eight studio albums since 1998 and are currently in the process of recording their ninth album in Texas. The new album is set for release in late 2016 or early 2017.
The band's most famous song, Shipping Up to Boston, featured in the 2006 Oscar winning movie The Departed which starred Leonardo Di Caprio.
Tonight is Dropkick Murphys' first performance at Live At The Marquee and will be supported by Stiff Little Fingers
